Supply: Replacement diffusers machined to the OEM flow passage
The diffuser sits immediately downstream of the impeller and does the job most people never think about: it converts the high-velocity air leaving the impeller into pressure, then guides it into the scroll for the next stage. Every stage of an integrally geared compressor has its own impeller and diffuser pair, and they are designed together. When the diffuser vanes erode, pit or crack, that conversion is lost — stage pressure drops, stage temperature climbs, and the machine burns more power for the same air. Turbomax supplies replacement diffusers machined to the original vane geometry, and can match them to a new impeller.
Stage efficiency falls — eroded vanes no longer decelerate the flow correctly, so less of the impeller's velocity energy becomes pressure;
Stage temperature rises — the energy that is not converted to pressure becomes heat, which loads the intercooler;
The next stage works harder — lower inlet pressure to stage 2 or 3 means a higher pressure ratio required from it;
Surge margin shrinks — a distorted gas path moves the operating point toward the surge line;
Power consumption rises — the same delivered air costs more motor current.
Because the symptoms overlap with a fouled impeller or a dirty cooler, the diffuser is often missed during diagnosis. On a TRE unit, for example, a stage that runs hot at a normal pressure ratio but cleans up after the cooler is serviced points at the gas path, not the cooler.
When to replace rather than clean
Vane leading edges are eroded, with the profile visibly changed;
Deep corrosion pitting on the vane surfaces or the diffuser walls;
Cracks at the vane root or in the diffuser body;
Impeller-to-diffuser clearance has grown beyond the drawing value after repeated rework;
The diffuser has been re-machined more than once and the vane geometry can no longer be recovered.
Deposits alone — even hard ones — can normally be cleaned off. It is the geometry that decides whether a diffuser is reusable.
What does the diffuser do? — It converts the high-velocity air from the impeller into pressure and guides it to the next stage.
When should it be replaced rather than cleaned? — When vanes are eroded, pitted, cracked, or when impeller-to-diffuser clearance is out of tolerance after rework.
Should impeller and diffuser be replaced together? — Usually yes — they are a designed pair, and replacing only one leaves the stage geometry mismatched.
Which models are covered? — IHI T2A, TXA, TRA, TRE, T3A, TRX; Cameron TA3000, TA6000, TA900.
What is needed for a quotation? — Model and serial number, stage number, part number or photos, and vane height or overall dimensions if the number is unreadable.
How to get a quotation
Send the compressor model, the stage number and a photo of the diffuser from the vane side. If the machine is currently running hot on one stage, include the stage pressure and temperature readings — that usually confirms which stage is at fault before you open it.
