Major overhaul, technical renovation and new high-speed rotors for IHI TRX, TRA, TXA, TRE, T2A, T3A and Cameron MSG oil-free centrifugal air compressors — by Turbomax Co., Ltd.
Scope: Major overhaul, technical upgrading, new high-speed rotor with dynamic balancing, control system renewal and on-site commissioning
Record: Before/after comparison photos and video for every job
A centrifugal air compressor does not fail suddenly. Long before a trip, the machine tells you it is tired: vibration creeps up, stage temperatures drift, the motor draws more current for the same air, and the surge line comes closer. Overhaul is the point where you open the machine, measure everything, renew what is worn, balance the rotor again and put the performance curve back where it belongs. Turbomax carries out major overhaul, technical upgrading and complete rotor replacement on IHI and Cameron integrally geared machines, in our Suzhou workshop or on site.
The scope below is the standard sequence we follow. On every machine the list is adjusted to what the inspection data shows — nothing is replaced "by habit".
Dismantling and cleaning — casing, scrolls, inlet and stage housings, gas cooler and oil cooler housings;
Inspection and measurement — impeller and diffuser condition, scroll erosion and cavitation, seal and bearing condition, all running clearances recorded;
Rotor work — rotor removal, cleaning, run-out check, and dynamic balancing to the original grade;
Bearing and seal renewal — tilting pad journal and thrust bearings, gas seal and oil seal, with clearance set to the drawing;
Cooler work — tube-side descaling, end-cover rust removal, pressure and leak test, or replacement with a new intercooler / aftercooler bundle when the old one is beyond cleaning;
Reassembly — new gaskets and service kits, impeller clearance check, shaft alignment, coupling check;
Start-up and verification — oil and filters changed, run-up, vibration reading, surge test, stage pressure and temperature compared with the before-overhaul record;
Documentation — before/after photos, clearance sheet and test data handed over with the machine.
Some TRX machines are structurally sound but no longer competitive: the control system is obsolete, the rotor group has been reworked several times, and spare parts are hard to find. Instead of a like-for-like repair we carry out a technical renovation:
New rotor group — new impellers and shaft, dynamically balanced as a complete assembly;
Control system upgrade — new controller and HMI, program loading, IGV and surge control re-commissioned;
Air path restoration — scrolls and diffusers cleaned, re-coated or replaced where erosion is deep;
Cooler replacement — new intercooler / aftercooler bundles when the old ones cannot hold pressure;
Whole-machine rebuild and on-site commissioning — alignment, run-up, load test, surge test, with before/after comparison records and video.

New high-speed rotor instead of a repair (IHI TRA)
A rotor that has cracked in service, or whose impeller group is destroyed, cannot be repaired economically — and a weld repair on a high-speed shaft is not something we would put back into a machine. For a TRA 450KW unit whose rotor broke in operation, we supplied a complete new rotor: shaft with all impellers, machined to the original dimensions and material, dynamically balanced, and assembled so that it drops into the existing gearbox with only the normal clearance and alignment checks.
Shaft, impellers and thrust collar supplied as one matched assembly;
Dynamic balancing of the complete rotor, not just individual parts;
Run-out and dimensional report with the balancing record;
Installation support: clearance values, fitting sequence and start-up check list.

When is an overhaul due? Signals we see on site
Vibration trend rising over weeks, especially on the pinion or bull gear probes;
Stage discharge pressure or temperature no longer matching the original performance curve;
Motor current higher at the same flow and pressure — a fouled gas path or cooler;
Surge happening earlier than it used to, or repeated surge events without an obvious cause;
Oil leakage at the shaft seals, oil mist rising, or metal particles in the oil filter;
Oil or air cooler leaking, or cooling water outlet temperature climbing slowly.
On the machines documented in our maintenance cases, the first major overhaul arrived at roughly 34,700 (IHI TRX160, ASU plant), 37,451 (IHI TX-A, Shenzhen plant) and 44,000 operating hours (IHI TRE60, steel mill) — a realistic window for heavy continuous duty, but the vibration and performance data always decide, not the calendar alone.

Frequently asked questions
When does a centrifugal compressor need a major overhaul instead of normal service? — When it reaches the OEM overhaul interval, or earlier if vibration, stage pressure/temperature, motor current or surge margin have drifted from the original curve, or if oil leakage and metal particles appear.
What is included in a Turbomax major overhaul? — Dismantling, cleaning, inspection, rotor balancing, bearing and seal renewal, cooler work, reassembly, alignment, start-up and surge test, with a before/after record.
Can you supply a brand-new rotor instead of repairing a broken one? — Yes. A complete new rotor (shaft with impellers), balanced and assembled before shipment, is the normal answer for a cracked shaft or a destroyed impeller group.
Do you work on site or in your workshop? — Rotor, impeller and cooler work in our Suzhou workshop; dismantling, reassembly, alignment, commissioning and surge testing on site or with your maintenance team under our supervision.
What do you need to quote an overhaul? — Model and serial number, nameplate photo, operating hours, latest vibration and performance data, and photos of any parts already suspected.
How to start
Send the compressor model, operating hours and the symptoms you see. We will come back with a scope, a parts list and a schedule — and if the machine only needs a component, we will say so instead of quoting a full overhaul.
