The Cameron TA3000 belongs to the Turbo Air TA range: an integrally geared, oil-free centrifugal air compressor where a single bull gear drives pinion shafts, and each pinion carries impellers that sit inside scroll and diffuser sections. Air is compressed stage by stage, cooled between stages in gas coolers, and the whole rotor train rides on tilting-pad bearings fed by a separate oil circuit with its own oil cooler.
That layout means three service items dominate the overhaul: the cooling circuits, the flow path, and the clearances that hold the flow path together. A fouled gas cooler raises the inlet temperature of the next stage; deposits on the impeller and diffuser reduce the flow area; and an impeller clearance that is left too wide during reassembly quietly costs pressure ratio for the next few years of running. All three are addressed in one shutdown.

Every scroll that is bolted back onto a TA3000 sets a clearance between the scroll face and the impeller tip. That gap is the machine's internal leakage path: widen it and compressed air simply recirculates instead of moving to the next stage, so the unit runs at higher speed for the same pressure and burns more power. Close it too far and the impeller can touch the scroll once the rotor reaches operating temperature.
Because the correct value sits inside a narrow band, it is measured at each stage during reassembly and written into the service record. Machines that "never made pressure again" after an overhaul almost always have a clearance figure missing from that record.
The core scope is cooler service and flow-path work: the gas cooler and oil cooler are cleaned, the inlet scroll, diffuser and impeller are cleaned and inspected, all scrolls are reinstalled with the impeller clearance measured and set, and the oil filter and oil mist element are renewed. Bearing or gearbox work is added only when inspection shows it is needed.
The scroll-to-impeller clearance controls how much air leaks back around the impeller tip. Too large and the machine loses pressure ratio and efficiency; too small and the impeller can rub the scroll when the rotor heats up and moves. The clearance is measured with feeler gauges or a lead-wire check at each stage while the scrolls are being bolted back down, so the final value is known rather than assumed.
A routine service covers filter and oil replacement. An overhaul becomes necessary when discharge temperature rises with the same cooling water conditions, the machine cannot reach its design pressure, vibration or bearing temperature trends upward, or water is found in the condensate from a leaking cooler. Those symptoms mean a cooler or the flow path is restricted, which can only be corrected by opening the machine.
On an integrally geared machine the usual causes are a fouled intercooler or gas cooler, deposits or erosion on the impeller and diffuser, worn impeller clearances after a previous reassembly, and a dirty inlet air filter. All four are checked in the same overhaul, because the machine has to be opened for the flow-path work anyway.
Yes. Turbomax supplies alternative impellers, diffusers, scrolls, gas and oil cooler bundles, tilting-pad bearings, inlet guide valves and the oil filter and oil mist elements for the Cameron TA3000. See our Cameron TA3000 spare parts list.
Send us the compressor model, serial number and the part numbers from the maintenance manual. We will confirm the part list, dimensions and availability before the shutdown window is fixed, and can supply coolers, impellers, diffusers and filter elements from stock or to drawing.
